Asha’s Journey to the Jemez Mountains
Mexican Gray Wolf
Asha’s journey to the Jemez Mountains is a love song to Mexican Gray wolves and to New Mexico. It was made in honor of the Mexican gray wolf, Asha, that twice journeyed to New Mexico from Arizona. During her second journey she was seen at the Valle Grande in the Jemez Mountains. She is made with an antique doll body, repurposed fabric, leather, beads, buttons and embroidery. Her body is collaged with specially chosen imagery from vintage New Mexico magazines and old New Mexico roadmaps., Her face and ears are embroidered. Leather and vintage French buttons are used to create her wise eyes. Her neck is embroidered with cartography symbolizing Redondo Peak in the Jemez mountains. Abalone and stone buttons are used for the joints connectors and blue and brown beads dangle from her shoulders. Her hands are made of wire and her lower legs are painted with acrylic paint to mimic her fur. Animals and birds who she might have met on her journey are shown on both sides of the tail. Vintage clothing patterns are collaged on her arms and binary code is typed on them with my mom’s old Remington typewriter. The binary code is a nod to the scientific community of northern New Mexico.
Asha’s Journey to the Jemez Mountains is a one of a kind mixed media textile sculpture measuring 29 x 16.5 x 7 inches with a hanging loop on the back. Because of the way she is jointed, she can also nicely sit on a shelf as long as she is provided a back rest.
